Dam gravity water systems safely transport water from a protected catchment area (usually sitting below a flowing river, stream or spring) to a community’s distribution tank.

Once water is in the tank, it will continue to flow into homes and schools.

Clean drinking water travels through a series of underground pipes and storage tanks before it reaches the household.

This stream is the source of fresh drinking water for 71 households and a primary school in Rukuruku

Gravity carries water from the fresh water stream to this home on the outskirts of Rukuruku village.

The force of TC Winston destroyed five water tanks in Rukuruku, forcing the community to cart water from a creek.

This tank was blown from its elevated station and needed repair.

Safe drinking water means children can stay healthy.

After TC Winston destroyed his village, Luke turned this classroom into an art space. He collected the surrounding debris and used it as his canvas.

Lili is testament to the strength of women and girls in the Pacific. Despite losing her home and classroom to TC Winston, she still shows gratitude and thinks positively about the future.

The Situation

The primary school shares the same water source as 71 households in Rukuruku settlement.

The school was experiencing water shortages due to leakages and a lack of storage capacity.

A request was made by the head- teacher in 2013.

Our water project designs first mapped out the leaks for repair, then upgraded the existing dam before increasing storage capacity with two new rota tanks.

This project was made possible with funding from the New Zealand Aid Programme via Rotary NZ Community Services Ltd.
